Do I feel more French than English? What is it that makes me want to live in France instead of England? These were the key questions at my naturalisation interview last week that I’ve thought long and hard about recently. Strangers have always loved to ask me this question when they hear my english twang, and I always give a flattering answer to do with her fluffy baguettes, his luscious legumes, the high welfare meat minced right in front of my eyes! Everyone here is fiercely proud of their rich food heritage, they also enjoy telling me about the fish and chips they ate that one time in England, or the crap reputation of our food heritage in comparison to ours (to which I always reply, we have the best international cuisine in London, you just got tourist trapped!) But what the powers that be want to know is if I’m serious about this commitment. Am I in this for the long haul, for better or worse, or am I just in it for the wine and dine? Well, obviously those reasons are well up there, but it’s so much more than that.
